Huddersfield Town will travel to Chesterfield in the first round of the Capital One Cup this season after the draw was announced this morning.

The make-up of Town's fixtures for the new campaign is beginning to take shape ahead of the upcoming 2014/2015 season, with Town's league fixtures due to be released tomorrow morning.

But Mark Robins and his side now know that one of their first assignments of the season will be a trip to the Proact Stadium, the home of last season's League Two champions since 2010, when they moved from Saltergate.

Paul Cook's men will entertain the Terriers on Tuesday August 12, just three days after both sides' opening day fixtures, and here is some more background information on Town's opening opponents in the competition.

2013/2014:

1st in League Two - The Spireites' last-day win over fellow League One new boys Fleetwood Town sealed the title ahead of Scunthorpe and Rochdale and capped a fine season which saw them embrace the tag as one of the pre-season favourites for the division.

They got off to a strong start, winning seven of their opening nine games to establish a stranglehold on the league table that they refused to let slip through their hands under the careful guidance of Cook and, buoyed by the goals of Eoin Doyle and Gary Roberts in particular, they went from strength to strength.

Cook's men were forced to overcome a series of blips, not least a testing October in which they failed to win in the league, and the jitters came in at the wrong time in March, with a 3-1 defeat at Cook's former club Accrington Stanley and a Johnstone's Paint Trophy final loss to Peterborough hardly the tonic ahead of the title run-in.

But they held their nerve to win their final three games in succession to end their two-year stay in the bottom tier and return to League One.

Manager:

Paul Cook - The Liverpool-born former central midfielder has managed four clubs since retiring from the game at Accrington in 2006.

He spent one year at Southport before moving to Sligo Rovers in 2007, where he spent five years and helped the club achieve a campaign in the Europa League as well as two FAI Cups and a League of Ireland Cup before linking up with former club Stanley.

He stayed there for just over 18 months but then took the reins with Chesterfield after the departure of John Sheridan in August 2012.

In his first season he led the club to an eighth placed finish – just two points outside the play-offs – before going one step further in 2013/2014, when 84 points was enough to finish top of the pile.

Star man:

Gary Roberts - The former Town fans' favourite experienced something of a renaissance last term and scored 11 league goals on his way to being named the PFA League Two Player of the Year.

Roberts was also one of just four Spireites players to take his place in the Team of the Year. This will be his first competitive match against his former employers but he did score in Town's 2-1 defeat at the Proact Stadium in a pre-season friendly last summer.

Other players to watch out for:

Tommy Lee -  The goalkeeper was joined Roberts in the Team of the Year and kept 20 clean sheets last season, a total bettered only by Scunthorpe United shot-stopper Sam Slocombe (21).

Ian Evatt - The former Blackpool defender also enjoyed a place at the heart of the Team of the Year's defence. Evatt helped form a resolute backline at Chesterfield alongside former Town loanee Liam Cooper.

Jimmy Ryan -  The 25-year-old slotted seamlessly into the Chesterfield midfield after his arrival from Scunthorpe last summer, and was a key component in their title success and surge to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

Summer signings and departures (to date):

Signings - Daniel Jones (Unattached).

Departures - Marc Richards (Northampton - Free), Nathan Smith (Yeovil Town - Free).

Last league meeting:

Chesterfield 0-2 Huddersfield Town - Tuesday 20 March 2012, League One, Proact Stadium

Town's first visit to the Proact saw them claim all three points thanks to goals from Lee Novak and Jordan Rhodes in a comfortable 2-0 win.

For all of Chesterfield's attacking endeavours, they looked vulnerable defensively and Novak capitalised midway through the first half with a wonder strike as his long-range volley looped over Lee in the Spireites goal to give Town a deserved lead.

They doubled it just 10 minutes later, with Rhodes netting his 34th goal in as many appearances by steering home Jack Hunt’s centre.

Last League Cup meeting:

Chesterfield 2-4 Town - Wednesday 24 August 2005, Carling Cup First Round, Saltergate

A Gary Taylor-Fletcher treble sealed Town’s passage into the second round, but only after they were made to fight for their win by a stubborn Chesterfield side.

Pawel Abbott handed the Terriers a ninth-minute lead by heading home but Chesterfield fought their way back into the contest and twice pegged Town back thanks to goals from midfielders Derek Niven and Kevan Hurst.

Those goals sandwiched Taylor-Fletcher’s first - a header - before completing his second-half hat-trick by capitalising on a backpass and with an accomplished finish late on to ensure Town reached round two.
