Rekeil Pyke marked his first start for Huddersfield Town’s Under 21 side with two goals in the 3-1 Professional Development League victory at Cardiff City.
Joe Lolley, returning to full fitness after a hip injury, got the other as Division II North leaders Town came from a goal down to win at the South Wales club’s home stadium.
First-year academy scholar Pyke, a former Rothwell Juniors player from Leeds, made his mark for the Under 18s last season and has started this campaign well.
His Under 21 call came because of an injury to Flo Bojaj, and he seized the opportunity to shine in a side which also included Adam Hammill as an overage player.
It was an eighth win in 10 games for Frankie Bunn’s Town side, who hit the woodwork through Joe Wright and Sondre Tronstad early on.
Wales Under 21 midfielder Tommy O’Sullivan put Cardiff ahead with a 35th-minute penalty after Jacob Hanson brought down Macauley Southam.
But a goal blitz early in the second half sealed success for the visitors.
Pyke headed home from a free-kick, then seized on a handling error by the Cardiff keeper to notch.
Lolley got the third, finishing off after a fine Hammill effort was parried.
Duane Holmes had a late shot cleared off the line.
Next up for the development team is a trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday (11.00).
