JOHN DUNGWORTH’S Town Reserve team, next in action against Coventry at Nuneaton Borough’s Liberty Way ground in the Pontin’s Holidays League Central Division on Monday (7.00), remain a highly useful outlet for first-team manager Andy Ritchie.

This week’s Pontin’s League Cup group tie at Chester, which finished 1-1, featured skipper Jon Worthington and fellow midfielder Danny Schofield, who both continued their comebacks from injury.

Like those two, David Mirfin, fresh from his cameo appearance as a centre-forward in Tuesday’s League I draw with Nottingham Forest, played the full 90 minutes, this time in his usual position of centre-back.

As well as giving first-year pros regular competitive football, the second team also provides the club’s youngest full-time players with invaluable experience of ‘adult’ football, and at the Deva Stadium on Wednesday, the likes of Daniel Codman, Shane Killock, Curtis Roberts, David Pickering, Dave Heagney and Tom Jackson from the Academy all turned out.

It was Town’s second of three Pontin’s Cup group games, following on from the 1-0 home win over Tranmere. Morecambe visit on Wednesday week (7.00).
