THERE’S to be a reunion for one of the most beloved Town teams of a generation.

The Fourth Division Championship winning side of 1979-80 are to get together at a 30th anniversary dinner at the Galpharm on Thursday May 27.

It’s been organised by Keith Hanvey, one of the team’s defensive rocks, and Steve Kindon – who became an instant crowd hero when he joined mid-way through that campaign – will be part of the entertainment.

Memories of that marvellous season, when Town won promotion and the silverware on the back of a century of goals, will no doubt be rekindled by the likes of Alan Starling, Andy Rankine, Malcolm Brown, Fred Robinson, Brian Stanton, Dave Sutton, skipper Peter Hart, Peter Fletcher, Dave Cowling and leading scorer Ian Robins, Mick Laverick and Bernard Purdie.

Manager Mick Buxton, who guided Town to another promotion three seasons later, will also be there to meet supporters.

“It was the re-birth of Huddersfield Town after some very lean years and they were special times for everyone,” said Hanvey.

“Mick brought together a collection of pretty average professionals – no-one had ever heard of most of us – and then it was just pure bonding.

“We pretty much allowed the two centre-backs to mark two strikers and then the rest of it was all about attack.

“When you look at it, we were basically playing 2-4-4 and that’s why we scored a flood of goals.

“Everything about it was fantastic. The players loved it, the fans loved it and there was a real passion about the club. In fact, many of the people who follow the club now fell in love with it because of that team and, 30 years on, it will be great to get back together again.”

Bookings can be made through Hanvey on 07775 660361 or 01484 315141. Prices have still to be set, but reservations can be made by table or individually.

“We hope it will be something that will greatly appeal to the fans and we want to make it a night to remember,” added Hanvey.

“It will probably include a Question and Answer session, the lads will be more than happy to give autographs and have their pictures taken and, with a three-course meal and entertainment, it should be a great way to mark the anniversary of a landmark and a much-loved team.”
