Roy Keane has revealed he wanted to change the colour of Ipswich Town’s kit when he was manager at Portman Road.

The Suffolk side have worn blue ever since their formation in 1878.

But former Manchester United, Celtic and Republic of Ireland ace Keane, in charge of Ipswich from April 2009 until January 2011, dislikes the colour because it is also worn by Rangers and Manchester City.

Keane says in his new book he asked Ipswich owner Marcus Evans to change the shirt.

Evans refused, saying there would have been “uproar”.

Keane jokes that meant there would be “four people taking to the streets” in the East Anglian town.

Keane, currently assistant manager of Aston Villa and the Republic, said: “Rangers, City, sorry, I can’t be doing with blue.

“Childish? Yeah, obviously.”

Meanwhile Ipswich defender Luke Chambers, who was recently linked with Town, says the chance of a Republic call-up has probably passed him by.

The Kettering-born defender is eligible to play for Martin O’Neill’s side due to his maternal grandfather hailing from Limerick.

He successfully applied for an Irish passport while at Nottingham Forest, has made his interest in a call-up public on several occasions throughout his career, but – at the age of 29 – has still heard nothing from the FAI.

“I’ve been qualified for a while and I obviously mentioned about it before, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen now,” he said.

“They are obviously watching us because there’s talk about (David) McGoldrick, (Daryl) Murphy, even (Stephen) Hunty. There’s no talk about me though.

“It’s just something that, if it comes it comes, but I’m not going to go out there begging for it and shouting from the rooftops.

“If they don’t want me involved then there you go.”

Ipswich have an injury worry over defender Luke Hyam (hip) for the clash with Town.
