LOWLY Royal proved a big hit in the West Riding Cup as they won a penalty shoot-out with Bradford-based Victoria IMS Rangers.

With one win and two defeats to their name so far this season the Crow Lanes-based club turned up trumps in the Cup with a 4-2 win from the 12-yard mark.

The sides were tied at 1-1 after 120 minutes with Shaun Barron netting for Royal, but then Wayne Reynolds, Luke Haigh, Mark Howland and Raymond Clayton hit the jackpot from the penalty spot to take the Milnsbridge side through.

Royal are joined in the third round by Heywood Irish and Walpole Community.

Walkers Arms are in the process of rebuilding after some of their players have decided to play Saturday football only.

They have, however, recruited some very useful young talent, who when they get it together should again prove a force to be reckoned with

But, on this occasion, they came up against a strong Bradford-based Albion Sports who gained a 2-0 win with a goal either side of half time.

Albion had 80% of the play, struck the bar four times and keeper Matty Day made some great saves, but the visitors to Longfield Avenue deserved their win, even though striker Antony Beever went close on a couple of occasions.

This game was excellently refereed by Elizabeth Simms, of Halifax, and it was a pleasant surprise that there was very little swearing.

Sunday League champions GNG Sikh Temple also went out of the competition, beaten 3-1 by Bradford Park Avenue Rangers. Sikh went 2-0 down but pulled one back only for the visitors to net again in the last minute.

All matches in the League were in Division II and again the results provided new leaders.

The previous club at the top Helion suffered their first defeat of the season when they were beaten 3-1 by Rose and Crown, which relegated Helion to third and moved Crown up to fifth.

Helion’s demise gave Wellington the chance to move top and they took it with a 3-2 win over bottom club White Horse. Eddy Hamlet scored twice and Daniel Johnson once for the winners while Dale Joy and Jamie Pearson replied for Horse, who, at the moment, are not firing on all cylinders.

Newcomers Cricketers Arms leapt into second spot as they shot down Gas Club 7-3 with Richard Hirst bagging a hat trick, Ben Leinasars (2), Damien Allan and an own goal doing the damage.
