Honest Town keeper Joe Murphy said Sheffield Wednesday could have had two penalties in the big Yorkshire derby.

Visiting boss Stuart Gray was left fuming by Graham Salisbury’s decision to caution Chris Maguire for diving rather than award a spot kick when the substitute went down under a Joel Lynch challenge.

Town boss Chris Powell admitted he feared the worst, and Murphy said sheepishly: “I maybe thought it was a penalty.

“And to be fair, they could have had another, because I caught Royston Drenthe on one occasion.

“But he stayed up, and I don’t think the referee saw it clearly.”

After two appearances in the Capital One Cup, the 33-year-old summer signing for Scunthorpe United made a league debut after Alex Smithies was ruled out by a back injury.

It was a pleasurable, if painful, experience, with three separate clashes with Scotland international striker Stevie May leaving him with shoulder and hand injuries.

“He caught me a few times – and he’s a big boy!” said the Republic of Ireland cap.

“I those situations, you try to manoeuvre your body to take the hit, but the first one hurt.

“I was winded, and he caught my shoulder. When I tried to get up I had pins and needles down my arm.

“Later on I took a knock on the hand, which was numb for most of the second half.”

It didn’t prevent Murphy preserving a clean sheet and a point with a fine stoppage-time save from Dutchman Drenthe, who is on loan to Wednesday from Reading.

“Mark Hudson did really well, because he showed the lad a certain way and I was able to take a gamble. I got a decent touch to it,” explained Murphy.

“It was great for us to get the clean sheet and the point.

“It probably wasn’t the best game as a spectacle, but the draw was a fair result.”

Jack Boyle and Ronan Coughlan (penalty) scored as Town Juniors won 2-0 at Sheffield United in the Professional Development League.
