MORE than 300 turned out to see Shelley kick-off their preparations for the new West Yorkshire League season against top non-league side FC United of Manchester at Storthes Hall.

The Northern Premier league team, who featured Ryan Giggs’ brother Rhodri and Ollie Banks, son of former Town midfielder Ian, were 6-0 winners.

But three of the goals came in the final 10 minutes, and Shelley, who host Tadcaster Albion tonight (6.30), were more than happy with the day.

“It was a great chance to show what’s been going on at Storthes Hall and to gain experience in dealing with a sizeable crowd,” said club director Lee Henton.

“From a playing perspective, it was always going to be a tough game, because FC United are a well-established club playing at a decent level.

“But our players enjoyed the test and will have gained good experience, while we received some very favourable comments from both FC United players and officials, and their fans.”

After taking on Tadcaster, of the Northern Counties East League, Shelley will host another Northern Premier side in Northwich Victoria on Sunday (3.00).

Ash Berry’s team, who won promotion to the West Yorkshire League top flight last season will also take on a Leeds XI on Thursday, July 25 (7.00).

Ambitious Shelley also run senior sides in the District League and will have 12, and possible 13 junior teams next season.
