Chris Powell has pledged to lead Huddersfield Town back to winning ways.

His side suffered their third straight Championship defeat as Rotherham United won 2-0 at a blustery John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday – despite having skipper Lee Frecklington red carded for a second bookable offence in the 75th minute.

Goals by Icelandic star Kari Arnason and on-loan Derby County striker Conor Sammon clinched the points in front of a tickets-issued crowd of 13,342 which included 1,986 away supporters.

Town, who had previously lost at Charlton Athletic and Brentford, remain 16th and 11 points above the drop zone.

However Powell pointed out: “We’re certainly not safe from being embroiled into a relegation scrap.

“We are fortunate the bottom three all lost on Saturday and it’s really disappointing we didn’t manage to put even more daylight between ourselves and them.

“There are still 10 games to go and we have to get back to the standards we know we can achieve.

“It’s time for the players to show character and for me to show leadership, and I am going to do that.

“I’ll be looking into why they haven’t been performing and I will cajole, motivate and inspire them to do much better.”

Next up for Powell and his players is Saturday’s visit to Birmingham City, who drew 2-2 at Derby County and are 14th.
