Huddersfield Town chairman Dean Hoyle, manager Chris Powell and leading player Jacob Butterfield are united in their belief that the transfer window should close before the start of the season.

Clubs have until 6.00pm on Tuesday to do business, with midfielder Butterfield a firm target of Championship rivals Derby County .

Hoyle last week sanctioned the loan signings of Middlesbrough winger Mustafa Carayol and Wigan Athletic midfielder Emyr Huws.

But he said: “Although I am delighted we have managed to bolster the squad, I believe the window has to shut before the start of the season.

“In my opinion, the make-up of squads should be sorted over the close-season.

“The room for manoeuvre once the season has started only benefits the clubs with more money.

“Having put in a lot of had work to shape our squad, the constant speculation surrounding our star assets does not do the club any favours whatsoever.

“And it makes Chris Powell’s job – already a high-pressure one – even more difficult.

“I am sure I am not alone in feeling this way, and I would like to see a push for serious change to this situation.”

Powell, who recently lost goal keeper Alex Smithies to Queens Park Rangers in a near £2m move, said: “There’s no doubt speculation is unsettling.

“It’s bad enough before the season starts, but now we are five games in.

“It’s hard when you build a squad around players knowing there is always a chance of them going.

“I know the window stays open into our season because many European league start later.

“I really don’t know the solution, but I think this has to be looked at.”

Butterfield, the subject of growing speculation in recent weeks, said: “I’ll be happy when the deadline comes and all this talk can be put to bed on way or another.

“It does seem strange that it goes on into the season. It doesn’t benefit clubs or players.

“But that’s the way it is at the moment, and you have to deal with it.”

Town skipper Mark Hudson moved from Cardiff City last deadline day, when the cut-off was 11.00pm.

The centre-back recalled: “It got to 2.00pm and I was at with my agent in his office in London waiting for confirmation.

“It wasn’t done until 9.45 in the evening, so it was a late one.

“I can imagine it would be exciting for some players, but it’s not something I would want to do again.”

Hudson added: “My two kids were born in Wales and we had a family home there.

“My eldest had just started a new school when I had to tell him we’d be moving.

“It would have been unfair to take him out of school straight away.

“So I left my wife and kids in Cardiff until I could get everything sorted out.

“I lived in an apartment for a couple of months until we found house and a school that would accept him at that time of year.”
