AKPO SODJE scored another cracking goal in vain as Town Reserves lost their third successive match at Blundell Park.

The 22-year-old striker fired in a rasping 18-yard drive six minutes from time to give added urgency to a late Town revival.

Unfortunately, they were two down at that stage to an inferior Grimsby side after wasting their first-half dominance.

It meant another three points down the drain in the Pontin's Holidays Division I East ahead of their League Cup assignment against Sheffield Wednesday at the Galpharm a week on Monday.

The damage of Town's woeful first-half finishing was compounded in 57 seconds of the second half when winger Ronnie Bull fired Grimsby into the lead.

He had been denied superbly in a one-on-one by Phil Senior just a minute before the break but, on this occasion, made no mistake from a Graham Hockless pass.

Town should not have been so easily exposed with Nathan Clarke, Nat Brown and John McCombe at the heart of their defence, but the second goal was also very disappointing.

It came from a bad clearance from Phil Senior which was intercepted in midfield by Chris Hyam.

With Town struggling to recover, he put Clint Marcelle clear to score with a lovely side-foot shot.

It rubbed salt in the Town wounds because Anthony Lloyd and McCombe had missed in the first half with the goal at their mercy and John McAliskey had had a superb 40-yard chip tipped over the top by Paul Fraser.

Town - Senior, Hardy, Lloyd, McCombe (Hand 70), N Clarke, Brown, Collins, Young, McAliskey, A Sodje, Ahmed. Subs not used: Walls, Giles, T Clarke, Shaw.
