NEIL ASPIN praised his side’s battling quality as FC Halifax Town prepare to hit the road in the Blue Square North.

The Shaymen went into the last 16 of the FA Trophy with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Maidstone United on Tuesday and are now preparing for the long League trip to Colwyn Bay on Saturday.

Aspin is hoping to improve on seventh place in the Blue Square North table and believes the fighting quality shown against Maidstone – which earned them a home tie against Chelmsford City on January 12 – will stand them in good stead.

“To be fair to the players, they kept plugging away,” said Aspin. “On the balance of the play overall, I felt we deserved to get the win in the end.

“Obviously when you go into injury time, you’re always hopeful to score but you don’t expect it.

“The lads put in some great deliveries, particularly from the left hand side, and if you keep doing that, you expect at some stage to get the goal – and it was lovely to see it go in at the end.”

Gareth Seddon scored both goals, one a simple header and the other a stabbed shot from Jon Worthington’s low cross deep into added time.

Alex Brown netted for Maidstone, sweeping home from a parried free-kick.
