Huddersfield Town will face six new sides in next season's Championship, with the 2015/16 campaign set to be as competitive as ever.

Relegated Premier League trio Hull City, Burnley and Queens Park Rangers will play in the second tier next term, as will promoted third-tier sides Bristol City, MK Dons and Preston North End.

And we begin our series with the West Country outfit, who won League One at a canter under the guidance of Steve Cotterill.

The season itself:

The Robins enjoyed a memorable year as they marched their way to the title in style, finishing just one point shy of 100 points with a goal difference of 58 and eight points clear of nearest challengers MK Dons.

Their ascent was all the more remarkable given that they finished 12th the previous season, and was built on a watertight defence which conceded just 38 goals in the league.

Boosted by the summer arrivals of Aaron Wilbraham, Kieran Agard and Luke Freeman, Cotterill's men were equally as impressive in attack, racking up some 96 goals - five shy of the Dons' total - including eight in a final-day drubbing of Walsall.

Freeman finished 2014/15 with 18 assists, more than anyone else in League One, while the club were also able to celebrate a Johnstone's Paint Trophy triumph, becoming the first team to win the cup on three occasions, while the title was the club's first in 60 years as they returned to the Championship following a two-year absence in style.

Highlights of the promotion campaign:

  • A 3-2 home win over promotion rivals MK Dons back in September which saw them go two up thanks to a Kieran Agard brace, before being pulled back to 2-2, only for Wade Elliott to net the winner as they moved five points clear at the summit.

  • Sealing a last-gasp victory over play-off hunting Chesterfield to maintain a five-point cushion at the top, with Wes Burns' injury-time winner coming after they had twice been hit back by Spireites striker Eoin Doyle.

  • Thumping Bradford City 6-0 to secure promotion at Valley Parade, with five different goalscorers on the scoresheet as Cotterill's men displayed an performance full of attacking verve to justify their place in the second tier.

  • Going one better on the final day by putting eight past a shellshocked Walsall side on the final day of the season, with defender Aden Flint plundering a hat-trick in front of the Ashton Gate crowd as the Robins were presented with their League One trophy.

Top scorer:

Aaron Wilbraham - The 35-year-old found the net 18 times during his maiden season with the club following last summer's free transfer switch from Crystal Palace to finish as the joint-sixth highest scorer in the division.

Wilbraham also hit three goals in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy run, with his most important league strikes coming against fellow promotion chasers Preston and Swindon Town in the run-in.

Other key players:

Aden Flint - The central defender struck a remarkable 15 times in 57 games across all competitions as he skippered the Robins to promotion and even netted in the Wembley win over Walsall to seal the JP Trophy.

Luke Freeman - The creative cog in the system for Bristol City, with 18 assists amassed in a stunning debut season from the former Arsenal academy graduate and was only narrowly pipped to the League One Player of the Year prize by Joe Garner, finishing third overall.

No-one managed more assists than Luke Freeman in League One last season.

Joe Bryan - Another player in the running for that accolade, alongside Flint, Freeman and Luke Ayling, was Bryan, who was the most creative defender in the third tier last season, laying on 10 openings for his teammates and finishing as the second highest assister in the Robins' ranks.

Last meeting with Town:

The Terriers and the Robins last faced off on April 27 2013 in the Championship at Ashton Gate, with Town coming out on top 3-1 to seal back-to-back wins for the first time since October.

James Vaughan was the hero for Town, scoring all three to boost their survival hopes as he first drove in from Lee Novak's cross before nodding home an Oliver Norwood free-kick to put Mark Robins' men two up at the break.

Vaughan completed his hat-trick from close range from another Novak cross before already-relegated City notched a stoppage-time consolation through Lewin Nyatanga's header as Town moved three points clear of third-from-bottom Barnsley.

Did you know?

City's tally of 99 points in 2014/15 was the highest the club has ever achieved in their history.
