Huddersfield Town will face six new sides in next season's Championship, with the 2015/16 campaign set to be as competitive as ever.

Relegated Premier League trio Hull City , Burnley and Queens Park Rangers will play in the second tier next term, as will promoted third-tier sides Bristol City , MK Dons and Preston North End.

And in the latest edition of our mini series, it's time to look at the Dons' remarkable rise to the Championship just 10 years after they were reformed.

The season itself:

Karl Robinson's side were League One's free-scoring outfit, amassing a stunning 101 goals in all during 2014/15 to deservedly pip eventual play-off winners Preston North End on the final day.

They finished the season on 91 points, eight off champions Bristol City, and with a +57 goal difference having hit four or more goals on nine separate occasions over the course of the campaign.

The Buckinghamshire outfit suffered mostly for their inconsistency early on and they were only able to secure consecutive wins four times before the turn of the year, with Steve Cotterill's side and the likes of Swindon Town and Preston threatening to accelerate ahead.

But after navigating through a tricky couple of months in January and February, it was the Dons who timed their run to perfection with nine wins from their last 10 games, including a 5-1 final-day rout of already-relegated Yeovil Town which sealed promotion with Preston going down 1-0 at Colchester United.

Highlights of the promotion campaign:

  • A 2-1 come-from-behind win over Swindon at the start of November saw the Dons leapfrog their visitors, who fell to fifth as a result, and keep up the pressure on the top two as Delle Alli and Antony Kay cancelled out Jonathan Obika's opener.

  • The 7-0 win over Oldham Athletic was the Dons' biggest score of the season and underlined their attacking prowess, as Will Grigg (2), Dean Bowditch, Darren Potter, Alli, Benik Afobe and Carl Baker put the Latics to the sword to lift Robinson's men up to second.

  • A 3-0 win at Swindon at the beginning of April helped Robinson's men do the double over the Robins, with Daniel Powell and Grigg (2) scoring the goals which put the hosts out of the automatic promotion picture and led to a straight end-of-season battle between themselves and Preston.

  • Dons did their bit on the final day with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Yeovil thanks to goals from Baker, Dean Lewington (2), Potter and Grigg and they managed to better their rivals' result, with Simon Grayson's side having to do it the hard way.

Top scorer:

Will Grigg - The 23-year-old was the chief goalscorer for the Dons and took on the role of primary goal-getter once Benik Afobe had secured a permanent switch away from his parent club Arsenal to Wolves in January.

Afobe hit 19 in all competitions, with 10 of those in the league, before departing but his exit allowed Grigg to step up and find another gear, with 10 of his 20 league goals arriving in the final 13 games of the season as he finished as the fourth highest goalscorer in League One behind Swindon's Andy Williams, Rochdale forward Ian Henderson and Preston hotshot Joe Garner.

Will Grigg was the fourth most potent frontman in League One last season

Other key players:

David Martin - The 29-year-old goalkeeper helped contribute to the division's third tightest defensive line with a commendable 22 clean sheets in total, equating to just under half of the Dons' league matches.

Carl Baker - Signed as a free agent at the start of the season and quickly established himself as a fans' favourite after displaying an eye for goal and a creative edge, registering 10 strikes for himself and teeing up his teammates for a further eight.

Baker scooped the club's player of the year award just a year after arriving on a free transfer

Samir Carruthers - The former Arsenal and Aston Villa starlet has finally found his home at Stadium MK and flourished in the No.10 role behind Grigg in Robinson's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, with his six assists the third best tally at the club behind Baker and the departing teen sensation Dele Alli.

Last meeting with Town:

Town fans will remember the last time these two sides met with great fondness, as they secured their place in the 2012 League One play-off final with a narrow 3-2 aggregate win over the Dons, despite losing the second leg 2-1 at the John Smith's Stadium.

Leading 2-0 from the first leg at Stadium MK thanks to goals from Jordan Rhodes and Jack Hunt, Town extended their advantage thanks to Rhodes' second goal of the tie as he finished neatly from a free-kick for his 40th goal of the campaign.

But the visitors hit back, with Powell firing home from an Adam Chicksen pass before half-time and Town were made to sweat late on as Alan Smith grabbed a second in stoppage time, but there wasn't enough time to stop Town from sealing their Wembley berth.

I don't think I need to remind you what happened next...
