Town could have had the match won in normal time (and later in Golden Goal Extra Time) with Chris Holland signalling early intentions by rattling Lee Butler's bar very early on.

Danny Schofield could have opened the scoring minutes later when he elected to shoot with his left foot, rather than square for Kenny Irons, only to see his effort flying wide of the goal.

Andy Booth slid in on a cross courtesy of a great move from Chris Holland and Steve Jenkins but saw his effort go wide by just a yard.

The Shaymen were not entirely cowed by the Terriers, however, and Steve Kerrigan's header was good from Harley's cross but the referee blew for a Halifax infringement.

The warning signs were there but Town continued to ignore them and, at half time, they were also rueing an Irons blast over the bar from 10 yards out.

Irons tried to make amends for his first half miss when his enticing corner was headed goalwards by Nathan Clarke but was cleared by a Halifax man.

Chris Holland had his effort saved from the rebound as Town became more frustrated by the increasingly confident Shaymen.

Both sides were equally matched as the second half drew to a close.

Gary Jones could have won the match in the 82nd minute with his curling effort hitting the base of Margetson's post with the Welshman stretching.

It might have been a fitting end to the match for the efforts of the visitors.

Minutes earlier Steve Kerrigan's earlier chance was snuffed out as the Terriers were coming under pressure from their visitors.

Town showed their quality towards the end of Golden Goal extra time (though there were worrying moments when substitute Simon Baldry had to be withdrawn due to injury) but efforts from John Thorrington, Paul Macari and Chris Hay were thwarted by Lee Butler and his defensive cohorts.

The penalty shootout loomed and Town kept their cool with penalties by Chris Hay, John Thorrington, Nathan Clarke and Kenny Irons while Martyn Margetson sealed victory for the Terriers by saving from Paul Stoneman and watching Grant Smith's effort sail over his bar.
