David Wagner says there is a “great atmosphere” around Huddersfield Town at the moment.

Just a few days into pre-season proper following a squad bonding trip to Sweden, the head coach – who signed a new contract last month – believes the feelgood factor at Town is strong.

And just 24 hours before the first friendly against National League Guiseley at Nethermoor, Wagner put it all in perspective.

“The players were desperate to get back to work and be out on the pitch, and the atmosphere is great,” said Wagner.

“I know it’s the same at all clubs at this time of year and everyone thinks they are the best – but I know why we have that feeling.

“It’s because of what we have done in the past – what we have started at the club – it’s because of the season-cards we have sold, it’s because of the players we have been able to keep, it’s because of the signings we have made, it’s because of a new backroom staff coming in to work and it’s because of the improved facilities we have here (work is ongoing at PPG Canalside).

“There are so many things that are positive about the club, and it’s always better to work in a positive atmosphere rather than a negative one, so we want to keep this going.”

Wagner is working to add a few more players to the eight senior professionals who have already come in – record £1.8m signing Christopher Schindler, Michael Hefele, Chris Lowe, Joel Coleman, Jack Payne, Ivan Paurevic, Elias Kachunga and Rajiv van La Parra.
