Danny Schofield's goal was a case of classic opportunism as he latched onto a deflected shot from Leon Knight to open the scoring for Town.

Leon Knight had beaten the offside trap and hit an effort towards Gary Kelly's near post which came off the Latics 'keeper but the ball fell beautifully for Schofield and he stroked the ball into the empty net.

Martyn Margetson had earlier made two saves from John Eyre and David Eyres.

David Eyres proved what a dangerous player he was as Oldham set out to pull one back.

The Latics found the going difficult in the first half but constantly improved after the break.

Dangerman Eyres put a great cross in early in the second half but Carlo Corrazin's turn and shot from 3 yards out somehow went wide.

The Latics' task became much easier after Andy Booth went off nursing a possible groin strain to be replaced by Chris Hay.

Without a target man to aim at upfront, the Terriers continued to aim long balls towards Leon Knight and Danny Schofield without much success.

Knight in particular was well marshalled by the big Oldham man Stuart Balmer and it was he who was rewarded for his fine defensive performance when he scored the Latics equaliser.

John Sheridan had already injected variety into Oldham's attack with some inspired substitions but it was the caretaker player-manager himself who came on to turn the match with some good passing moves.

The 75th minute equaliser arrived from a Sheridan pass into the Town danger area which Nathan Clarke tried to clear but the England U19 youth was unaware of Stuart Balmer stealing in behind him.

Balmer caught Clarke completely cold and netted beyond Martyn Margetson to level the scores and spark the start of some real Oldham pressure which might have won the points for the home side.

The Terriers were finding life without Andy Booth difficult and they had to produce an outstanding defensive performance to keep the Latics out.

Steve Jenkins and Nathan Clarke in particular excelled at the back in clearing chances for Oldham to steal all three points late on.
