TOWN today confirmed the capture of Tranmere midfielder Antony Kay on a two-year contract.

As predicted by the Examiner last Saturday, Galpharm boss Lee Clark has beaten off competition from a clutch of clubs to land the 26-year-old ex-Barnsley player.

Kay, left, was a centre-back for the Reds, making 168 appearances, including both legs of the League I play-off semi-final against Town in 2006, when he also figured in the final win over Swansea.

He was converted to a midfielder by Ronnie Moore at Tranmere, where he played 96 games and netted 19 goals, including two in the 3-1 win over Town at Prenton Park in March.

Because he is out of contract, no fee is involved.

Clark said: "Antony was a target well before he scored against us!

"He is a strong, physical player and we have identified that we need that type of presence, particularly away from home when you are not always allowed to play your usual brand of football.

"As well as being able to score goals, he can also play as a central defender, which is another plus."

Kay said: "Lee didn’t need to sell the club to me. You can see the desire he and (new chairman) Dean Hoyle both have. I want to help achieve their goals."

Midfielder Ian Craney is being linked with Morecambe while Town are rumoured to be among a clutch of clubs tracking Stockport’s ex-Nostell striker Oli Johnson.

Town launch their new away kit, modelled by their new signing (above), at the stadium superstore between 11.00 and 3.00 tomorrow.
