February 26 2013: Burnley 0 Town 1

James Vaughan pounced to clinch Mark Robins’ first win as Town manager.

The club were desperate to preserve Championship status after promotion the season before and had axed Simon Grayson after a poor run of results.

And this three-point haul lifted former Coventry City boss Robins’ charges six clear of the drop zone.

It was the ex-Manchester United striker’s fourth match at the helm.

Vaughan stabbed the ball home in the second half after Adam Clayton’s effort was saved.

Burnley’s Sam Vokes hit the bar as 11,266 watched.

Bobby Hoy was the hero as Ian Greaves’ side sealed a crucial top-flight win.

The tricky winger scored twice and created Town’s other goal for Jimmy Lawson.

It was a fourth victory of the First Division campaign for promoted Terriers, who were to finish 15th.

And it was more comfortably achieved than the scoreline would suggest.

Frank Worthington twice hit the woodwork in front of an 18,209 crowd.

Future Town favourite Steve Kindon scored for Burnley, who were relegated.

Frontline partners Vic Metcalfe and Jimmy Glazzard were on target on a tense afternoon at Turf Moor.

Town were fighting to preserve their top-flight status, and crossed the tops the day after a 7-1 thumping at Sunderland.

Left winger Metcalfe, who scored 90 Town goals in all and former miner Glazzard (153) brought delight for travelling fans among a 23,081 gate.

But there was disappointment in store as the Leeds Road side were relegated for the first time in their history.

Manager George Stephenson was gone before the end of a season in which Burnley finished 14th.

His replacement Andy Beattie was to lead Town back to Division I at the first attempt.

Town claimed their 16th win of an encouraging first season at the helm for Clem Stephenson.

The manager had been the captain of the famed triple title winning team of 1924-26.

While inconsistent in the league (they finished 10th in the top flight), Town went to Turf Moor having clinched an FA Cup final berth.

Dave Mangnall, Gerry Kelly and Harry Raw scored for the visitors, who were missing star Scotsman Alex Jackson through injury.

Jackson scored in every round of the FA Cup, except the Wembley final against Arsenal, which Town lost 2-0.

Burnley were relegated, their poor form reflected in an attendance of 9,418 against Town.

Charlie Wilson, a lethal marksman from the Midlands, got right into the Christmas spirit as Town clinched what remains their best-ever win at Turf Moor.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Coventry City striker scored four times, with George Brown bagging the other for Herbert Chapman’s side in front of 23,000.

Top dogs Town were in the middle of their celebrated hat trick of Football League championships.

The fixture was reversed on Boxing Day, and Chapman’s side won 2-0 through Billy Smith and George Cook.

Wilson finished 24-goal top scorer (Brown notched 20 times) as Town took the title by a two-point margin from West Bromwich Albion.

Burnley finished 19th.
