STAR player Lomana Lua Lua has backed former Town manager Mick Wadsworth to lead DR Congo to African Nations Cup glory in Tunisia.

Wadsworth's team begin their Group A campaign against Guinea on Sunday, with Lua Lua, who played for Wadsworth at Colchester and Newcastle, skipper in the absence of injured striker Shabani Nonda.

The Monaco star is one of the most prolific scorers in the French League, and Lua Lua admitted: "Shabani's a big player for us and we're going to miss him.

"But at the same time we must see this as an opportunity for another player to come into the side and show what he can do."

On Wadsworth, who is in his first job since being sacked by Town late last season, Lua Lua said: "Our coach is treating us like his sons. He's really doing a good job with all the players and motivating us well.

"Everyone's just looking forward to the event because chances to play at this level don't come often. We all know what football means back home, so we're here to win."
