Watch Regan Booty score decisive shoot-out kick as Huddersfield Town beat Charlton Athletic to reach semi-finals of Under 21 Premier League Cup

Charlton outsted in Under 21 Premier League Cup

Huddersfield Town fired in six perfect penalties to make the semi-finals of the Under 21 Premier League Cup at the expense of Charlton Athletic.

After the sides were locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes of application and action at the John Smith’s Stadium, Regan Booty drilled in the decisive kick for a 5-4 shoot-out success - watch a video of the goal above.

Duane Holmes, who had levelled from spot in the first half, Jack Boyle, Flo Bojaj and Jordy Hiwula had earlier notched from the spot, while Erzi Konsa missed Charlton’s third attempt.

Town included Hiwula, recently recalled from his loan at Wigan Athletic, and the striker tested visiting keeper Dimitar Mitov in the opening minute of an entertaining tie.

However Charlton were keeping the ball well in the early stages, and took a seventh-minute lead through Josh Umerah.

He shot home in the rebound after Tadhg Ryan tipped a low shot by Anfernee Dijksteel against his left-hand post.

A foul on Jacob Hanson, who made a surging run into the area, gave Holmes the chance to equalise by sending Mitov the wrong way from the spot after 13 minutes.

Town then had the better of the exchanges before the break, with Bojaj and Ronan Coughlan both having shots saved.

Meanwhile Hiwula hooked a volley over after good approach play by Booty and Jack Senior.

Left-back Senior was to the fore as Town started the second half strongly. He had a shot deflected, then teed up Hiwula, who was thwarted by Mitov.

The Bulgarian keeper was beaten when Holmes curled in a shot from another Senior pass, but the ball hit the outside of the right-hand post.

Town were forcing the pace, and Senior went agonisingly close with a spectacular 25-yard strike, only for the agile Mitov to top the ball away for a corner.

Jake Charles took a knock and was replaced by Jack Boyle in the home team’s first change after 65 minutes.

Town continued to look the more dangerous, but were unable to force a second within 90 minutes and the tie went to extra time.

Bojaj twice came close during the first additional 15 minutes, but both times Mitov saved, then home stopper Ryan blocked an Umerah shot with his feet before saving from Brandon Hanlan.

Charlton were coping with extra time better than Town, and Umerah had an effort deflected for a corner before Hanlan drove the ball wildly off target when well placed.

Ryan thwarted George Lapslie with another good save, while Bojaj could have won it after a neat Hiwula dummy, but couldn’t beat Mitov from 10 yards out.

Town: Ryan, Hanson, Senior, Booty, W Boyle, Kane, Holmes, Coughlan (Spencer, 98), Hiwula, Bojaj, Charles (J Boyle, 65). Subs not used: Williams, Horsfall, Guthrie.
