TOWN'S Carling Cup hopes were ended by Kevin Nolan's close-range winner seven minutes from time - but only after Newcastle had been given a big scare.

The home side bossed the early stages of the second-round tie at St James' Park, where more than 4,000 Town fans helped swell the gate to 23,815, and Danny Guthrie fired them ahead in the 36th minute.

But Theo Robinson seized on a defensive slip to level less than 60 seconds later, then put Town ahead with a 39th-minute penalty after he was fouled by keeper Tim Krul.

The travelling supporters were in dreamland two minutes into the second half, when Jordan Rhodes slotted home from an acute angle to put Town 3-1 up.

But just a minute lafter that, Geremi pulled one back for Newcastle, then Shola Ameobi levelled with a 64th-minute penalty after he was brought down by Andy Butler.

Nolan netted the clincher after Ameobi nodded on Ryan Taylor's free-kick.
