David Wagner is “very happy” with the form of Liverpool loan keeper Danny Ward and Huddersfield Town’s new centre-back quartet.

The head coach watched 23-year-old Ward keep a clean sheet on his 45-minute debut against Werder Bremen in Austria which followed an extended break due to Euro 2016 duty with Wales in France.

And Wagner was full of praise for his men at the heart of defence – record signing Christopher Schindler and Mark Hudson in the first half and Michael Hefele and Jon Gorenc Stankovic in the second (when Luke Coddington was in goal).

“The centre-backs are playing well and I’m very happy with all of them,” confirmed Wagner after the 0-0 draw with the Bundesliga outfit.

“We’ve got to have this competition in each position because it’s a long season, and it’s important they all fight for themselves to become better and more consistent.

“We want them to fight at the highest level and, if they get a chance on the pitch, they must deliver.

“With Danny Ward, I thought he looked very good and very strong.

“He is a personality in the goal and I am very happy to have him with us.

“It’s been great to bring him into the group in Austria and he will help us in the future for sure.”
