IT was a day that promised so much.
Tens of thousands of Town fans took over half of Manchester United’s famous Old Trafford ground for their club’s biggest game in a decade.
And they certainly made themselves at home on the Stretford End, chanting and singing long before the 3pm kick-off.
They’d overcome horrendous M62 traffic jams and queues for the trains, determined to enjoy their day out.
Many poured into the bars of Manchester and Salford Quays well before the game, determined to make it a day to remember and a season to cherish.
It was a friendly invasion by the Blue and White Army, and the recruits came from every generation.

DEAN HOYLE admits he’s excited about Town’s hot promotion chase and beamed: “We’ve got a lot to play for.”
Town head to Yeovil on Saturday with the chance to go second in League I following the well-earned 1-0 away win against Hartlepool.
Manager Lee Clark has orchestrated an unbeaten league run of 12 matches since New Year and Hoyle has pledged to continue investment both on and off the pitch.
His three major objectives remain to get Town into the Championship, to regain their share in the Galpharm Stadium and to develop the £5m Canalside training ground project as a legacy for future generations of supporters and the community.
“You’ve got to be excited about where we are,” said the chairman.

DEAN HOYLE cut through the heartbreak of Huddersfield Town’s play-off misery and pledged: “We must aim to be champions next time.”
The club owner promised to fund another shot at promotion after watching Lee Clark’s side lose 3-0 to Peterborough at Old Trafford in the League I play-off final and miss out on a potential £10m Championship windfall.
The chairman, who provided blue and white T-shirts for a 31,000 Town following in a crowd of 48,410, comforted players on the pitch after goals from Tommy Rowe, Craig Mackail-Smith and Grant McCann in the space of eight minutes ruined a record 27-match unbeaten run.
“I’m proud of everyone,” said Hoyle, who has bankrolled the club against big losses.

HUDDERSFIELD Town owner Dean Hoyle has confirmed Gary Roberts has turned down a two-year contract extension with the club.
The chairman also revealed that because of the League I salary cap coming in for 2012-13 a clause in the new Roberts deal ensured that if Town don’t win promotion in the coming season his salary would go down.
Hoyle, a lifelong fan who has seen Town narrowly miss out on promotion for the last two years under manager Lee Clark, said the club have had inquiries about 27-year-old wingman Roberts but no firm offers.

LEE CLARK is hoping Benik Afobe will be “fit and firing” by the time Town play in the fourth round of the FA Cup on the weekend of January 29/30.
The Galpharm manager confirmed after the third-round defeat of Dover that the 17-year-old England junior striker’s loan from Arsenal has been extended until the end of the season.

Darragh MacAnthony – whose Peterborough United beat the Terriers 3-0 to win promotion – told fans they could “wipe their a**es” with their banners.
The chairman was filmed making the remarks to thousands of supporters outside Peterborough Town Hall.

HUDDERSFIELD Town boss Lee Clark today slapped £1m-plus values on the club’s top young stars but told supporters: “I don’t want to sell any of them.”
The Galpharm boss spelled out his policy to keep the squad together amid reports of interest from Championship club Millwall in leading scorer Jordan Rhodes, and from Leicester in goalkeeper Alex Smithies and talented all-rounder Lee Peltier.
Clark – who is continuing to work on possible incoming deals to add to Calum Woods from Dunfermline – stresses he does not want a revolving door on transfers in the build-up to a 2011-12 campaign for which fixtures are released tomorrow.

Six goals, a sending-off, a nail-biting penalty shoot out and a pitch invasion.
Still, as long-serving Town fan Malcolm Kaye said: “It wouldn’t be Town if it was any other way”.
The fans, who had created an unbelievable atmosphere inside the stadium from long before the kick-off, partied long into the night.
Thousands of them poured on to the Galpharm turf - soon to be dug up and re-laid - seconds after Anthony Kay blasted home the winning penalty.
