Supporters of a certain vintage will remember Alan Ball and his white boots.

The England World Cup winner was a trend-setter when playing for Everton and Arsenal in the early seventies after agreeing a deal with Hummel.

Derby County’s Alan Hinton also wore white, but there were few others who deviated from the traditional black.

These days, it’s all different, with a survey showing white boots are the most common among top-flight footballers.

It’s the same at Town, with five of the 11 who started at Norwich City last Saturday wearing white and just three, Jonathan Hogg, Conor Coady and Sean Scannell, going for black.

The Premier League survey showed almost 48% of players favoured white during the last round of action.

Just 15% wore black boots in the games between December 13 and 15.

Green – in its various shades – was also more popular than black on 16.4%. However skipper Mark Hudson was the only Town player to go for that colour at Norwich.

The Press Association survey showed 17 different colour varieties.

Hull City were found to be the most ‘old school’ team with six pairs of black boots, but even in these cases the toes were a different, brighter colour.

Stoke City, Chelsea, Leicester City and Everton steered clear of black boots altogether.

Manchester United, West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion sported the greatest range with six different colours worn by their starting sides.

Chelsea’s Diego Costa had his shooting boots on as he notched his 12th goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Hull - and what boots they were!

The Spain striker’s footwear was an assault on the eyes of pink and blue.
