Alex Smithies is ready to take his place in the Queens Park Rangers squad against Rotherham United at Loftus Road.

And it’s a coincidence that the only goalkeeper to top his tally of 274 appearances for Huddersfield Town also played for latest opponents Fulham.

Hugh Turner might have failed to make the grade at Darlington, but he shone at Leeds Road and Craven Cottage.

He featured 394 times for Town in between joining from North-Eastern non-league side High Fell in April 1926 and moving to Fulham in June 1937.

He played in the 1930 FA Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley, was an ever-present in five Town seasons, and made 181 consecutive appearances between April 1928 and March 1932.

Wigan-born Turner won two England caps, both in May 1931, and later that year, played for the Football League representative team.

He was on the small side for a keeper at 5ft 9in, yet commanded his area.

And his agility and anticipation reduced the need for him to be spectacular.

Turner turned out for Darlington side Felling Colliery before signing for the town’s Football League club in June 1924.

He lasted just one season, moving to High Fell before being recruited by Town.

Turner took over from Ted Taylor, the former Oldham Athletic keeper who won championship medals with Town in 1924 and 1926, missing the middle of the hat-trick campaigns because of a broken leg.

At Craven Cottage, he was the successor to celebrated Fulham keeper Alf Tootill, and remained at the London club until the War.
