Former Huddersfield Town striker Jon Stead is a reported target of League I Chesterfield.

The 32-year-old, who has two spells with the John Smith’s Stadium club, is expected to sign for Bradford City, where he spent the bulk of this season on loan.

But he has yet to put pen to paper at Valley Parade, and new Spireites boss Dean Saunders is said to be interested.

Stead, out of contract this close-season, netted in Town’s 5-3 Capital One Cup first-round extra-time win at Chesterfield in August

He scored 11 times in 40 games for Bradford, five of them coming in the Bantams’ run to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

As an emerging talent, Huddersfield-born Town academy product Stead notched 24 goals in 76 games to earn a £1.25m move to then-Premier League Blackburn Rovers in February 2004.

The former England Under 21 international later played for Sunderland, Sheffield United, Ipswich Town and Bristol City before rejoining Town two years ago.

His second stint brought 10 starts, 13 substitute appearances and three goals.

Stead, who has scored 105 career goals at club level, was loaned to both Oldham Athletic and Bradford City last season.

Former Wrexham, Doncaster Rovers, Wolves and Crawley Town manager Saunders was appointed by Chesterfield last week.

He replaced Paul Cook, who joined Portsmouth in the wake of Chesterfield’s play-off semi-final defeat by Preston North End.
