Huddersfield Town striker James Vaughan has joined Birmingham City on loan until January 2.

The 27-year-old is not being considered by new boss David Wagner right now, so the loan to his hometown club presents Vaughan with a chance to play matches and get fit.

Town have a recall clause after the first 28 days should they wish to bring him back and he can’t play against them a week on Saturday.

Vaughan hasn’t been able to complete enough training sessions to force his way into Wagner’s new-style gegenpressing line-up and was not in line to figure against Middlesbrough.

He could, however, go straight into Gary Rowett’s line-up to face Brighton.

Vaughan last appeared for Town as a second-half substitute under caretaker boss Mark Lillis in the 3-0 home defeat by Leeds United .

He was not included by new boss David Wagner for the trip to Sheffield Wednesday and it seems the striker has not been able to do enough at PPG Canalside to convince the new head coach he’s ready to face Middlesbrough.

Vaughan has not made a start for Town this season and was sent-off when he returned from injury against Ipswich in October. He has made a total of four appearances from the bench this term.

The former Everton and Norwich striker – told previously his contract would not be renewed – is in the final year of his terms at Town.

Huddersfield Town Head Coach David Wagner explained: “I have discussed my plans with James openly and he has told me how he sees things also.

"Our initial plan for James was to build up his fitness over two weeks like we did with the other players in the squad, but he was starting from a different position because of injury.

“When the possibility of a loan came up, James asked me if we would consider it. I considered the advantages and disadvantages of his, the fact that it is for only six weeks and that James wanted to go and we decided to allow it.

"I am happy with the loan.”
