Middlesbrough could be about to end their pursuit of Huddersfield Town midfielder Adam Clayton after their hopes of completing a quick deal for the Terriers' Player of the Year hit a stumbling block, according to a Gazette Live report.

Town's star man last season has figured on Boro boss Aitor Karanka's shortlist this summer but the Teessiders have been unable to complete a deal, despite formalising their interest with a concrete offer.

The valuation of that bid fell well below the price tag Town have placed on Clayton's head and, as such, the clubs have reached an impasse.

Gazette Live also claim that Town have moved the goalposts by increasing their asking price for Clayton after reports Boro were set to up their initial test-the-water £1m bid to £1.5m .

The report also suggests each of Wigan Athletic, Nottingham Forest and Norwich City hold an interest in Clayton, who has just one year left on his deal at the John Smith's Stadium, while Brighton and Hove Albion had a bid knocked back in January .

The inability to push through a deal has left Boro frustrated and they may now move on to other targets, with another striker and a right-back two other positions Karanka wishes to strengthen in.
