Former Huddersfield Town striker Jon Stead has joined Notts County.

He has signed on a two-year deal.

Stead was released by the John Smith’s Stadium side at the end of last season, having spent most of the 2014-15 campaign on loan at Bradford City, scoring in the memorable FA Cup wins over Premier League sides Chelsea and Sunderland.

The move means Stead, a former England Under-21 international, could feature against the Terriers when the two teams meet in the League Cup first round on August 11.

Huddersfield-born Stead was out of contract at Town, where he came through the academy and had two spells.

Bradford City, who had him on loan last season, appeared to have given up hope of signing him permanently.

Stead scored 11 times in 40 games for Bradford, five of them coming in the Bantams’ run to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

As an emerging talent, he notched 24 goals in 76 games to earn a £1.25m move to then-Premier League Blackburn Rovers in February 2004.

The former England Under 21 international later played for Sunderland, Sheffield United, Ipswich Town and Bristol City before rejoining Town two years ago, scoring a toal of 105 career goals.

Meanwhile former Town loan full-back Jazz Richards has joined Huddersfield’s Championship rivals Fulham from Swansea City.
