It has been a big day of transfers for teams up and down the Championship but the most excitement has been created on Teeside, as Middlesbrough aim to shake off the heartbreak of their play-off final defeat.

With the team in southern Spain preparing for the new season, three new faces have arrived and the excitement is growing in the camp.

Downing, Woodgate and Kalas

The big story in the Championship today is Stewart Downing's shock move from West Ham to Middlesbrough .

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic has come up with some very kind words for Downing and insists he was a big part of his plan for the East Ender's final season at Upton Park.

He said: "I didn't want him to go, he's a quality English player and I know how hard it is to get the quality ones.

"Of course I rate him, I tried to persuade him to stay with us."

"I was counting on him big time, but he told me that he wanted to go home."

The player was quick to praise Boro chairman Steve Gibson for his part in facilitating the deal. He said: "It was a difficult transfer to do but the chairman had a lot of faith in me and drove things through.

"I know what I have got to do to repay him and that is help the team win promotion."

The signing comes on the back of Jonathan Woodgate's decision to return to the Riverside and came before the season-long loan for Chelsea's Tomas Kalas was clinched.

GazetteLive Boro editor Philip Tallentire says the arrival of Downing and Woodgate has created a real buzz at Boro's Marbella training base.

Jordy Hiwula

Huddersfield Town pulled off one of the deals of the day too, by landing Jordy Hiwula for £150,000 from Man City.

The Huddersfield Examiner broke the story and say the England junior striker is heading to Spain to join up with Chris Powell’s squad on their training camp having agreed terms with the John Smith’s Stadium club.

On completing the deal, the excited manager said: "A lot of hard work has gone in behind the scenes to get this deal done, throughout which the people at Manchester City have been excellent to deal with."

Town face Leyton Orient in Marbella tomorrow and Hiwula could feature.

Could Bridcutt be left?

Former Brighton star Liam Bridcutt has been told he can leave Sunderland, after a torrid time in the north east.

But the Black Cats insist he won't be allowed to leave on loan according to the Sunderland Echo but he will attract the interest of many Championship clubs.

They say: "Sunderland are not prepared to make a hefty loss on the £2.5million they paid Brighton to sign Bridcutt 18 months ago, even if his wages could be covered during a loan stint in the Championship."

Raising the cash

With Bolton struggling to raise to cash to buy want-away striker Adam Le Fondre from Cardiff, a group of enterprising fans have set up an online fund raising account - with a view of getting £500,000 together.

The striker, who had a successful spell on loan at the Macron Stadium last year, would like to return and has applauded the efforts of fans on Twitter but so far only £400 has been raised.

You'd Byram believe it

One player who could be heading to South Wales though is Leeds full-back Sam Byram.

Reports are surfacing that Byram is set to be the subject of a bid from Swansea City.

The 21-year-old, who has been rated at around £8million, has just a year left on his contract at Elland Road and could become available at a bargain price.

Football League World claim Garry Monk might be tempted to test Leeds' resolve with a cheeky bid.
