Bright stars Golcar United are the Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup kings.

Goals early in each half saw them to a deserved 2-1 win over West Riding County Amateur League rivals Storthes Hall at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The scorers were Dean Wharam and Wayne Shooter and both goals showed that touch of class to light up any game.

Golcar were deserving winners. Their busy, determined style was too much for Storthes Hall who opted for a slower, intricate, short-passing game that failed to carve open a resolute defence.

Golcar had the edge over most of the pitch, notably with experienced Steve Smith, who gave a man of the match display in midfield, and in livewire striker Wharam. He proved a constant handful for the Hall defence, dragging them across the field with darting runs and some sublime skills.

He showed that with his side’s first goal on 10 minutes, dragging the ball clear of a Hall defender to slide it past James Roberts in the Hall net.

Josh Rodgers was looking the liveliest of the Hall’s creative players and hit a post with an excellent shot, but chances were at a premium.

The second half was barely three minutes old when Golcar struck again. Shooter started and finished the move, picking up the ball on the left and playing a neat one-two with Wharam before firing home with aplomb.

Golcar keeper Ashley Glover was called into action as the Hall finally upped a gear and proved more than capable with two excellent saves in as many minutes.

Hall substitute Jos Bradshaw entered the fray with 15 minutes remaining and he certainly livened up their attack.

He had a half chance which was pulled wide but finally found the net in the 92nd minute with a fine solo effort.

But it proved too little, too late for the five-times winners.
