A partnership of 95 between Gharib Nawaz and SP Singh steered Hoylandswaine into the semi-finals of the All Rounder Sykes Cup.

The pair played patiently in the carried-over tie against Scholes at Chapelgate to ensure their side knocked out last year’s beaten finalists.

Scholes had been dismissed for 148 by some mean bowling and Premiership rivals Swaine were 14-1 in reply before rain forced the teams off.

On the resumption, Scholes knew a couple of early wickets would ramp up the pressure, but Nawaz and Singh had other ideas.

Nawaz hit 10 fours and a six in his 55, while Singh fell two short of a half century, having hit six fours and two sixes as Swaine reached 152-5 in 30.2 overs.

Max Joice finished on 16 not out, after skipper Michael Cranmer had fallen to a brilliant boundary-edge catch by Josh Brook off Tom Chadwick, while Tom Brook was the best of the Scholes bowlers with two for 43 off nine.
