Ismail Anwar faces a tricky challenge from Robbie Barrett, but has what it takes to claim the Darfield lightweight’s Central area title.

That’s the view of trainer Chris Aston as the Huddersfield fighter prepares to face the Southpaw at Barnsley Metrodome on Friday.

Anwar, 24 (right), has the psychological advantage of having beaten Barrett, 23, back in 2013.

But since then, his opponent has won five out of six fights, taking his record to eight victories, two defeats and a draw.

Anwar’s is 5-7-0, but as Aston pointed out: “He’s kept good company and always travelled.

“Ismail is far from a journeyman, and he’ll always take up a proper challenge on his opponent’s territory.

“Barrett will give him that, because he’s a capable fighter and a Souhpaw into the bargain.

“They always take a bit of working out, and the fact this is a 10-rounder will give Ismail that extra time.

“The aim is to force Barrett to take up an orthodox style, and Ismail’s experience will help him.

“So will having beaten him before, but we’re well aware that there is a tough night’s work looming.”

Barrett claimed the Central area title by beating Barnsley’s Brad Botham at Doncaster in February.

Central is one of seven areas within the British Boxing Board of Control’s jurisdiction.

“You’re talking about he heartlands of the sport, placed like Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Hull,” added Aston.

“This title can be a stepping stone, but it’s also worthwhile in its own right.”

Anwar’s Huddersfield stablemate Tyrone Nurse fights Welshman Chris Jenkins for the vacant British light-welterweight title at Manchester Arena on Saturday, July 18.

Super-middleweight Alistair Warren and light-welterweight Luke Keleher both head to Sunderland for bouts on Sunday week, July 5. Warren faces home fighter Jonson McClumpha while Keleher takes on Durham’s Gary Fox.
