Huddersfield’s former champion Scott Waites is out of the BDO World Championships.

The darts ace from Fixby, 37, found Scotland captain Ross Montgomery in brilliant second-round form at Lakeside and was knocked out 4-0.

Waites, who won the title in 2013, just couldn’t find his best form, taking only three legs in the match, and Montgomery – known as ‘Ross the Boss’ – powered into the quarter-finals along with Glen Durrant, who beat Jamie Hughes 4-1.

Montgomery’s display was by far the most impressive of the tournament so far and the 52-year-old was visibly emotional after reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in eight visits to Frimley Green.

He posted a three-dart average of 97.30 and hit 12 of his 18 attempts at a double.
