Young Giants prospect Jared Simpson is desperate to follow in the footsteps of his famous rugby league-playing father.

During an 11-year career at Bradford, Roger Simpson was one of the most respected wingers in the game, scoring 72 tries and making one England appearance, against France in 1995.

Now his 17-year-old son has taken a major step in trying to emulate Roger’s achievements by joining the Giants’ Super League squad for full-time pre-season training.

At this stage, the former Moldgreen junior utility back is still a part-time player, combining playing with his studies.

But he has made no secret of his desire to maintain the Simpson tradition and make a name form himself at professional level.

“I’d love to do as well as my dad,” said Jared, whose father finished his playing career at Batley in 2001.

“I know he’d be absolutely delighted for me if I did make it in the game. He’d been as proud as punch.

“He’s always been there to give me support, and that obviously means a lot to me.

“I know I’ve still got an awful long way to go to do what he did in his career, but the opportunity I have now to train with the senior squad is definitely putting me on the right track.”
