Huddersfield Heat have secured promotion to division one, their third in four seasons after they beat London United in the first of a double header weekend.

Promotion from league two at the first time of asking is the second trophy The Heat have added to their trophy cabinet following their Patrons Cup win back at the end of February.

Huddersfield completed promotion with a comprehensive 109-94 victory against second bottom in the league. Miguel Molina was the pick of the players at Park Lane on Saturday finishing the game on a personal 41 points.

It was a dominant start to the game for Heat, which set the tone fit for the occasion. The home side raced into an early lead with Nick Crowder hitting a lay-up from Sosa to take Heat into a 21-7 lead. Eduardo Perez’s side were displaying some tantalising stuff, Molina showed some dazzling dribbling skills to run through and score from under the basket to extend the lead further, Heat finished the quarter strongly and in a commanding 31-18 lead.

Molina continued his fine form in the second, but United upped their game and got back into it closing the quarter out with Dusha and Bezuiddenhout getting the London side only eight behind, 59-51. The third was equally as tight with both teams keeping the score board ticking over, United got within four with Nunn converting a number of frees but at the end of the quarter The Heat increased their lead to 10, 81-71.

Heat pushed in the final quarter, Mendez and Camin excelled as the away side began to tire and only had two bench players to call upon. At the mid-point of the quarter, Molina, Sosa and Skaines found the basket to build a lead that looked difficult to come back from as Heat approached three figures (97-81). Through fortune, it was Salva Mendez who reached the 100 mark for Heat, his attempted alley-oop for fellow Spaniard Molina went straight into the basket, to the surprise of everyone. The final buzzer finally secured Huddersfield’s fate with the win leaving them 14 & 4 gaining them promotion.

Coach Perez was delighted to finally confirm promotion, he said: “It’s a great achievement. When the dust settles a little, we are going to realise we’ve got out of Division Two at the first attempt and won the Patrons Cup. To put it into context, in 2009 we were in Division Four and four seasons later, we are going to be in Division One, it’s just absolutely fantastic.”

With the champagne corks already popped, The Heat finished their perfect weekend with a 81-71 victory over London Westside. The sides had already met earlier in the season in the pool stages of the Patrons cup were Huddersfield came out victors. Coach Eduardos men were leading 42-30 by the break with Julio Sosa being the pick of the players finishing on a personal 26 points.

Westside closed the gap ending the third all level at 57-57 with Offiah (21pts) and Peray (14pts) providing Westside with a way back into the game. Whilst The Heat had already secured promotion Westside are still in danger of relegation and going into the final quarter had the chance of a very credible victory.

It was a high tempo final quarter in which Sosa along with Nick Crowder (15pts) proved their class. The Heat quickly moved into a seven point lead and from then did not allow for the gap to close any further. Through out the second half of the fourth Westside only scored a single point as the Heat raced away with a 81-71 victory.

Huddersfield Heat have one more game of the regular season next weekend as they travel to London Westside in the reverse fixture. Following that The Heat enter the end of season play offs with a chance to complete the triple and what would be a remarkable season
