Huddersfield will host the finals of the National Schoolboys Boxing Championships next month.

The prestigious event will take place at the Sports Centre on the weekend of April 5/6.

And Tommy Mooney, from the town’s Gladiators Boxing Academy, believes it’s a reflection of a string of successful amateur shows staged by the Linthwaite-based club.

“We’ve had four shows so far, with another scheduled for May, and I’d like to think the powers that be have taken notice,” he said.

“For the Amateur Boxing Association to want to bring the event here is great for our club and great for Huddersfield.

“They are historic championships, and down the years, boxers competing in the finals have gone on to have very successful professional careers.

“We know from our shows that there is an appetite to watch boxing in the town.

“This is a chance to see some of the best youngsters in the country.

“And normally, some famous names are in attendance, so it can be a case of playing spot the celebrity.”

The semi-finals took place at Liverpool and Feltham, near London.

In the finals, action gets under way at 1.30pm on both days.

Gladiators had two boxers, Billy Holmes and Jack Hirst, in action at Harehills in Leeds.

Holmes chalked up a fifth straight win on a unanimous decision while Hirst suffered a controversial points loss.

Meanwhile Fartown-based Ayub Khan, of the KBW gym at Dewsbury, made it eight wins from eight bouts.

The 16-year-old defeated Cam Shaw, of York ABC, on a unanimous decision.

Former Royds Hall student Khan drew blood in round one and forced Shaw to take a standing eight count in the second.
