Huddersfield YMCA grabbed a share of the points with a 15–15 draw against Lymm at Laund Hill in National III North.

Both teams came into this game with something to prove.

On their last outing Lymm had beaten high flyers Firwood Waterloo and desperately wanted to build on that impressive result.

The home team, however, needed to regroup after the 80–3 mauling at Sheffield Tigers.

YM welcomed back Tom Sharrock and Lloyd Bentley and gave debuts to Arvin Pooloogadoo on the wing, Jack Ledgard at stand off and Glynn Edwards in the second row.

Given first use of the gale the YM camped in the Lymm half but the resolute visitors defence held firm.

Despite constant promptings from debutant fly half Ledgard who was bringing centres Ed Barber and Adam Ryder into the game, there was no way through the Lymm defence.

The visitors were reduced to 14 men when Lymm’s big second row was given a yellow card for foul play.

YMCA could not capitalise on their advantage and it wasn’t until the 34th minute that the deadlock was broken when Wilson knocked over a penalty when the visitors were caught offside.

The half ended with YMCA having a slender 3-0 lead despite being dominant in the scrum and playing with the elements at their backs.

Lymm, now playing with the wind, soon began to put the home team defence under pressure.

YMCA responded and Ryder sent full back Fletcher on a 70 metre run to within 10 meters of the visitor’s line. From the breakdown quick ball to Barber allowed him time to float a delicate chip to the opposite side of the pitch where wing Bentley won the race to the ball.

Wilson missed the conversion from the touchline but YMCA now had a little breathing space.

However, YMCA were reduced to 14 men when the unlucky James Bell was yellow carded for interference at the breakdown, the team having been warned previously of further infringements.

McAvoy knocked over the resulting penalty to give the visitors a foothold in the game.

Unlike YMCA in the first half Lymm did make the advantage pay as centre Lancaster sliced through the stretched home defence to score just wide of the posts. McAvoy converted to put Lymm in the lead for the first time 10-8.

With Bell back on the field the YM began to reassert themselves and make headway into the visitors 22. From one such attack the ball was turned over and, with the wind behind, the relieving kick flew 80 metres down the pitch to stop in the home in goal area.

The speedy Lymm wing Halford raced fully 90meters to win the race to score a try. Conversion missed Lymm now had a seven point lead.

With time almost up YM were battering the visitor’s line. Hooker Wrafter was held up over the line which resulted in a 5 meter scrum.

From a steady scrum Wilson fed Ledgard who in turn gave the ball to Ryder who powered his way over the line from close range. Wilson cooly knocked over the conversion to give the YM a share of the spoils.
