Huddersfield YMCA have moved up to National League status in English rugby union for the first time in the club’s history.

Having finished the season as runners-up in North I east this season, they faced a promotion play-off against Birkenhead Park, who were the second placed team in North I West.

The Laund Hill side had to travel across the Pennines for the showdown but came away 29-19 winners to claim their place in National III North next season.

Head coach Jody Shaw said: “The lads fully deserve their big day.

“They have been focused on doing their job and they have gained the reward for the work which they have put in.”

It is the second consecutive promotion for the team, who were also play-off winners last term.

“It’s not just the way we have knuckled down in matches, it’s the way the lads have trained, right from pre-season and throughout the campaign,” said Shaw.

“The work ethic and attitude has been excellent.

“I don’t think at the start of the season anyone expected us to do this well and it has been fantastic, because confidence has grown and the lads have thrived on it,”
