Mark Robins and Adam Hammill both hailed Town’s travelling fans after the 2-1 defeat at Ipswich.

Town had 515 in a 15,386 crowd and manager Robins said: “They travelled a long way and paid good money, and I am disappointed we couldn’t get at least a point to reward them.”

Hammill, who played under Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy at Wolves, said: “The fans were brilliant and made themselves heard all the way through the game.

“We certainly owe them one after conceding two stupid goals.

“I thought we were unlucky to lose and it was a bitter pill to swallow.

“We could have been home and dry at half-time, but in the second half we got sucked into the way they play, which is very direct.

“Being beaten is a kick in the teeth, but we must dust ourselves down and go again.”

Hammill played a key role in Town’s 35th-minute goal, scored by Danny Ward after James Vaughan touched on his delivery from the left.

“It fell to the right man in Danny, because he has got a wand of a left foot,” added Hammill, who hit the bar just before the break.

“We created far more than them in the first half, and we could have come in three up.”

Hammill said he would be interested in taking over penalty duties but refused to criticise James Vaughan for his 25th-minute miss from the spot.

“There’s absolutely no blame on James,” he insisted. “He has been magnificent for us, he had bottle to take it, but sometimes they don’t go in. It happens to almost everyone who takes penalties on a regular basis.”

In a game of two Tommy Smiths – both Town and Ipswich fielded centre-backs of that name – boss Robins handed a fleeting sixth Town appearance to Duane Holmes, who came on for Jonathan Hogg as four minutes of time added on began.

On-loan Manchester City striker Harry Bunn was an unused substitute for Town.
