Jack Dyson is Champion of Champions at the Griffin Bowling Club for the second time – but only after an almighty fightback.

Dyson was 20-12 down in the final against Ronnie Wormald – the most consistent performer at the winter venue all season – but he fought back to level and then pinched it at the end despite looking like he would lose.

At the last end, with a yard of room all round, Wormald played his last bowl looking like a winner all the way, but he hit Dyson’s short bowl, knocking that in for Dyson to take the second Champion of Champions crown of his career.

It had not looked like it would finish that way.

With the green running fast and yard woods winning most ends on a tricky surface, Wormald took a commanding lead in the final and, at the 21st end, was 17-9 up.

By the 26th end he was within a chalk of victory, but then Dyson started his fightback in the event, sponsored by George Fellows.

Before the presentation of the trophy and prize money, club president Alan Hirst thanked the sponsor of the last 21 years, George Fellows, for his exceptional support.

Hirst confirmed Mark Wood and his family have offered to provide sponsorship for the Champion of Champions in future.

He went on to thank the Woods for their work in the kitchen, greenkeeper Eddie Haigh, club officials and committee members.

Hirst commented on the difficult playing conditions, thanking all the competitors for their efforts and then said Wormald would not know how he lost the final, and, equally, Dyson would wonder how he had managed to win it.

Dyson received £110 as winner and endorsed the thanks Hirst had made.

He added his thanks to club secretary Frank Greenwood an to the president for all their hard work.

Dyson said he was delighted with the victory and amazed how he had managed a nine break against a club stalwart like Wormald.
