John Turner, a founder member of Crow Nest Park Golf Club, will be president of the Halifax-Huddersfield Union next year.

He is the first man from the club to be chosen as president-elect (this year) and says he is honoured to be taking office.

The 65-year-old commented: “I am delighted to have been nominated for these prestigious positions.

“I am looking forward to working with our member clubs, our Executive and other stakeholders to promote this wonderful game of golf to all parts of our diversified communities.”

In golf, he helped set up Crow Next Park in the summer of 1995 and, after being vice-captain the previous season, was captain in 2000-01.

He was elected the club’s second president in 2004 and served for nine years.

A lifelong Huddersfield Town fan, Turner was president of the Halifax-Huddersfield District Rabbit Golf Association in 2007-08 – he was vice-president the previous year – and he remains actively involved as a life member.

He was elected to the Executive of the Yorkshire Rabbit Golf Association in 2009 and his current tenure runs to 2019.

Representing Crow Nest Park on the committee of the Halifax And District Past Captains’ Association since 2009, he was co-opted onto the Executive of the Union in May last year.

While his duties with the Union will now step up, he’s been on the committee of his club for 13 of their 20 years in existence and he’s served on a number of organising committees, such as pro-am, fundraising, marquee and presentation nights, and he was appointed club historian last year.

Divorced with a daughter and two sons, Turner spent his entire career with the former Halifax Building Society, now HBOS, starting at the Cloth Hall Street branch in 1967.

He also worked in Wales, Liverpool, the South of England, Scotland, Leeds and Halifax and retired as an Executive of HBOS in 2004.

After that, he worked in the wedding industry and is a professional toastmaster.

A past chairman of the Halifax Choral Society, he’s also had a love of sport throughout his life and, in the 1990s, was manager at Brighouse Juniors FC for 10 years.

He spends as much time as he can in Spain and also enjoys sampling the multi-cultural cuisine at local restaurants.
