Kevin Plowman, who plays table tennis for Scissett Working Mens Club in the Huddersfield League First Division, has won The National Championships for people with disabilities.

The event was held at Grantham Meres Leisure and attracted the best wheelchair players in the country.

“I am absolutely over the moon to win the British Disabled Table Tennis Nationals,” said Plowman.

“I won both my class singles and the open event as an unranked player.

“Having played most of my table tennis in the non-disabled leagues I was pleased I could adapt my game to compete against the best wheelchair players in the UK.”

Having narrowly lost in the doubles event in the quarter-finals, Plowman was fired up for the singles events and won his Class 3 singles title against the defending champion, Ashley Davis from Wales.

Not satisfied with this, he battled his way to the final of the open event, defeating the 2013 champion Jack Hunter-Spivey three games to one.

The open final was quite daunting as it was on the show table with cameras, spectators and two upires, which is something you don’t get in the local leagues.

“I think my experience playing paralympic wheelchair tennis calmed my nerves and I was able to concentrate on the task at hand,” he added.

Plowman is now concentrating on a strong finish to his table tennis season in the Huddersfield, Wakefield, Dewsbury and Sheffield leagues.

Yaroslava Shvedova will tackle world number one Serena Williams in the second round of the Sony Open after surprising Francesca Schiavone on Tuesday.

Kazakhstan’s Shvedova, currently ranked 59th in the world, ousted veteran Italian Schiavone 6-4 6-2 in Miami’s WTA Sony Open tennis but must next face 17-time grand slam winner Williams – the reigning champion and top seed in this year’s competition.

Carolina Garcia and Klara Zakopalova will play the winner of that encounter after the French player ousted Aleksandra Wosniak 6-3 7-5 to progress in the high-profile event, which is keenly fought.
