A well-known face is leaving the Huddersfield golf scene – but staying in the district.

Former Union scratch team manager, Chris Mear, has left Meltham after 18 years and joined Halifax Ogden with his wife, Denise.

Chris, 61, who managed the team from 2005 to 2013, and his wife are planning to move closer to Denise’s relatives in Halifax when they sell their house in Meltham.

They are also hoping to buy a property in Almeria, Spain, and spend some time there.

The two handicapper has, unsurprisingly, been welcomed with open arms at Ogden and already been signed up for the scratch team.

He said: “It’s all part of our retirement plan. I’ll be commuting to Ogden until we sell the house.

“I’ve got a lot of friends at Meltham and I will be coming back regularly to play -and taking some of them to Halifax.

“Ogden is like an inland links course. Playing it is all about distance control and I am looking forward to the challenge.”
