Moorlands have been promoted as champions of the Jedi Sports Championship on a dramatic last day in the Drakes Huddersfield League.

The Mirfield-based club beat long-term leaders Thongsbridge to the title thanks to a six-wicket home win against Holmfirth.

And while Thongsbridge lost heavily at Kirkheaton, they were promoted to the Premiership only on run average after finishing level with Meltham, who won by five wickets at home to Clayton West.

Delighted Moorlands are back up at the first time of asking after Darrell Sykes and Andrew Walker took five wickets apiece to restrict Holmfirth to 109 all out at the Memorial Ground.

Jared Maxwell and Michael Padgett were then in at the end to make sure the promotion party started at 112-4.

Thongsbridge needed a point to be certain of promotion, but they didn’t get one at Kirkheaton, where overseas Cameron French hit 113 in their 241-9 total.

Kamran Saleem hit 36 of those and then took four for 68 – backing up Nathan Swift’s four for 36 – to ensure Thongsbridge were sent back for just 177.

That meant the calculators were out once the Meltham victory was confirmed against Clayton West, who set a 160 tartet at Mean Lane.

Mudasar Butt took them to victory with a fine unbeaten 65 but it wasn’t enough.

With points level and the head-to-head between Thongsbridge and Meltham level, the runs average showed Thongsbridge in front with 1.320 compared with their rivals’ 1.151.

Denby were relegated despite crushing Linthwaite because Lascelles Hall won by just two wickets at home to Marsden.

Chasing 189-8 in which Danny Clee hit 62, the Hall got home, just, thanks to a half century from Hussain.

Qaiser Rashid hit 86 as Denby put up 199 at Linthwaite, for whom Amir Afzal took five for 41, and then Adnan Ghani took six for 36 as the home side fell for 65 – but they went down anyway.

In the other Championship match, Rastrick won by three wickets at Slaithwaite, chasing down 145.

In the top flight, champions Delph round off a tremendous season unbeaten thanks to a cruching nine-wicket win at Skelmanthorpe.

Wasim Qasim, who took a hat trick at Lidgett Lane last season, was at it again with seven for 32 as Skelmanthorpe were skittled for 84.

Chris Laker finished 32 not out and Nathan Jones 36 not out as Delph reached 86-1.

Kiwi Tom MacRury signed off with a century for Scholes, 101 in their 235-9 total at Armitage Bridge.

MacRury then took five for 51 with the ball as the Bridge were bowled out for 193.

Michael Cranmer had a ton for Hoylandswaine in their mammoth 335 at home to Barkisland, who reached 224 themselves thanks to Daz Robinson’s 66.

Henry Cooper hit 69 to round off a fine season with Broad Oak in their five-wicket win over relegated Shelley.

Cawthorne enjoyed an exciting win at relegated Elland, totalling 277-8 with 83 from Liam Wiles before restricting Elland just 12 runs short. Alistair Finn hit 89 of those, skipper Robin Broom 64 and Saqib Matlub 65.

Kirkburton hit 186 to win by 76 at Honley, while Golcar lost by four wickets at Shepley after totalling 105, Danny Wood taking five for 38 and Oliver Davidson five for 37.
