Huddersfield’s newest cycling team has been launched for this season.

Known as HDR, the team was formed by local riders to develop a competitive Huddersfield-based race team in road-racing and time-trialing.

The team currently includes 28 riders and includes second, third, and fourth Category road-racers as well as time-trialists.

The new team’s racers have accumulated wins, podiums, and top-10s in recent years with other clubs and they attended a training camp in Spain before the racing season starts this weekend.

Team secretary Mark Newby said: “The 2015 season is going to be an exciting first year for HDR.

“We have plenty of talent and many discussions about team tactics have taken place, with an emphasis on the team.

“The current membership ranges from university students with the very top of the sport as their goal to former county champions passing down their knowledge and experience, while still riding at the highest levels.”

Paul Smith, one of HDR’s founding members, added: “There are several local clubs that do a great job of promoting youth and family cycling, recreational riding, and general rider development in a wide range of disciplines.

“But we felt that there was a real opportunity to build a team committed to racing on the road, with great local sponsors helping to provide the right structure and environment to support amateur racing in Huddersfield at the highest level.

“HDR team members regularly take part in weeknight training rides, along with well supported Sunday morning rides, often incorporating 80-100 mile rides throughout Yorkshire, broken up by a cafe stop for refuelling prior to the dash home.”
