There was a great result for Longwood Harriers in their first Northern League track and field match of the season as they won the meeting.

Competing against senior club teams from Boston, Bradford, Grantham, Grimsby and Wombwell at Cudworth’s Dorothy Hyman Stadium, the young Harriers team surpassed expectations by winning a league match for the first time.

There were notable performances all round, and up-and-coming sprinter Danny Walsh achieved treble success taking the 100m in 11.3 seconds, the 200m in 22.8 and the B string long jump with a 4 metre 77 cm leap.

Nathaniel Stock took first place in the 1500m in 4.43.0 and third in the 800m in 2m.10.8.

James Clark won the B string 800m in 2.20.2 and third in the B 400m with a time of 58.4, and Michael McGowan was first in the B string 100min 11.6 a time good enough for second in the A string race.

The field event athletes had a busy day with Chris Sampson taking three second places in the hammer (33.10), the javelin (24.56) and the shot (9.41), and third in the discus (24.54).

Jack Kirk gained three first places in the long jump (5.75), triple jump (10.88) and in the B string high jump (1.45), and also ran a leg in victorious Longwood 4x100 relay team.

Other athletes in the mens team were James Garner, Niall O’Connell, who was first in the B string 800m, James Scholes, Eddie Berry and Martin Maynard.

The ladies were no less busy with Natalie McGuire achieving four firsts in the 200m (27.1), the 400m (61.8), and 4x100 and 4x400m relays.

Kirsty Leih had a tough day with third in the 1500m in 7.07.6,second in the 3,000m in 15.29.1 and second in the 400m hurdles in 93.2, and ran a strong leg in the winning 4x400m relay team.

Her sister Meegan racked-up big points in the field events taking part in four events.

She was second in the hammer (33.38), second in the shot B string (7.39), second in the discus B event (22.05) and third in the javelin (14.43) as well as running a leg of the 4x400m relay.

Other ladies in the team were Beth Scadett, Hannah Pearson, Francesca Robertson, Emma Pearson, Rachael Scholes, and Susanne Pickersgill.

Team scores: 1 Longwood 341pts, 2 Grantham 336, 3 Grimsby 256, 4 Boston 109, 5 Bradford 108, 6 Wombwell 91.
