Jacob Quinn aims to underline his credentials for the National Novices Championships when he crosses the Pennines on Friday.

The featherweight prospect from Huddersfield’s Gladiators Boxing Academy fights the unbeaten Paul Smith in Rochdale, writes Luqman Liaqat.

Three of his clubmates will also take to the ring at Whitworth Civic Hall.

Rajan Singh Gosal looks to get back to winnings ways after the disappointment of losing in his home show before Christmas.

He faces Jake Law, of Rossendale ABC, while Marvan Ibrahim lines up against Littleborough’s Richard Helme.

Conner Doyle takes on Lewis Broughton, from Northwich’s Lostock Club.

Quinn is a noted hard worker in the gym and said: “I believe I am looking twice as good as a few months ago.

“I have sparred for 30 rounds to try to come out with another win in this bout.”

Quinn continued: “My ambition is get through this fight and enter the Novices later in the year before going anywhere near thinking about turning professional.”

Gosal learned a lot from his defeat two months ago and has tweaked his tactics.

“The last fight is gone now. I know what I did wrong and it won’t happen again,” he said.

“I left myself open to shots and did not put enough power in my punches.

“This year I am looking to pick up more wins and increase my experience to get further in the sport that I love.”
