Halifax's Hannah Cockroft is a double world champion after gaining her second gold medal at the International Paralympic Committee World Championships in Lyon.

Competing in the Women’s 100m T34 in the Rhone Stadium the wheelchair racer, who won double gold at the London 2012 Paralympics, took her second title in three days by setting a new championship record winning in a time of 17.88 seconds.

Cockroft had already enhanced her reputation as one of the most dominant athletes in the world by taking Great Britain’s first gold of the championships in the T34 200m with a crushing victory on the first day – winning by just under two seconds.

Cockroft had said going into the championships that she hoped for a sterner challenge from her rivals, but yet again the athlete nicknamed ‘Hurricane Hannah’ was in uncompromising form as she finished well over a second and a half in front of silver medal winner Amy Siemons, of the Netherlands.

Great Britain’s other finalist Melissa Nicholls, from Gloucestershire, finished outside the medals in fifth place.
